What You Need to Know

The City of Elgin, located in Comanche County, was incorporated in July 1902. Since that time, Elgin has continued to grow along with an extensive rural area. Elgin is located about mid-point between Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls, Texas on Interstate 44, and is next door to Fort Sill, the United States Fire Center of Excellence.

City Services

Police Protection
The Elgin Police Department has four full-time officers, one of which is assigned to Elgin Public Schools.

Fire Protection
The Elgin Fire Department has one full-time Fire Chief and 25 volunteer firefighters.

Cemeteries
The Elgin Cemetery is located just east of the Elgin Public School on Hwy 17.

Elgin Memorial Cemetery is one mile east of town at the intersection of Hwy 17 and Trail Road. For more information on either of these cemeteries call (580) 492-5777.

St. Ann Catholic Cemetery is approximately ½ mile east of town on the north side of Hwy 17. For more information call (580) 492-5914.

Fort Sill National Cemetery is located west of Elgin on 2648 Jake Dunn Road. For more information call (580) 492-3200.

Water
Elgin’s water supply comes from the Rush Springs aquifer. The city maintains four wells east of town. To establish water service, contact City Hall at (580) 492-5777.

Sewer
Elgin maintains a lagoon east of town. Sewage is included on the water bill for resident’s using city water.

Garbage Collection
Garbage collection service is through the Multiple Community Services Authority and is included on the water bill.

Animal Control
Animal control is privately contracted through the city.  The animal control facility is located on Welch Road. Dogs within the city limits must be licensed.

Building Permits
Building permits are required for new construction, add-on renovations, garage conversions, permanent pools, fences, carports and storage buildings. Please contact City Hall for a complete list and fee schedule.

Voting Places
Voting for all elections is at Elgin High School Gym located at 520 I Street. Early voting takes place at Connections Church located at 102 NE Windy Road or at the Comanche County Courthouse located at 315 SW 5th Street in Lawton, OK.

Community Center
Elgin maintains a Community Center at 801 1st Street. It is used by the Delta Nutrition Program, an ASCOG AAA Title III Funded Nutrition Site, to feed lunch to senior citizens in the area. Can be rented out by contacting City Hall at (580) 492-5777.

Elgin Community Library
The library is located at 108 Thoma Drive. Hours are  T-Th 10-6, F & S 9-12. For more information call (580) 492-6650.

Education

Elgin Public Schools

Elgin Public Schools is a 5A school district serving children grades PK-12. The school provides many educational opportunities along with a strong extracurricular program . Elgin’s students and population enjoy the luxury of a high quality academic education with great physical accommodations while still benefiting from a small town location without many of the big city problems. Elgin residents pride themselves in strong parent participation in school activities.

Extracurricular activities available: academic team, band, baseball, basketball, cheer-leading, chorus, cross country, dance team, drama, FFA, 4-H, football, golf, rodeo club, speech, soccer, softball, swimming, track, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling.

Housing

Elgin is a growing community in southwest Oklahoma that boasts one of the premier school systems in the region. There are many housing opportunities available to new citizens moving to the area and is within driving distance of many recreational facilities.

In the last few years, Elgin has experienced a tremendous growth spurt. There are approximately 20 new housing developments, with homes averaging 1400+ square feet. Many are located on ¾ – 1 acre lots. There are also several established neighborhoods boasting a wide variety of size and style.

While rental homes are in short supply, Elgin has some new apartment complexes that are 1-3 bedroom. Duplexes and quad-plexes are also available. Newly remodeled, Meadow Park Estates is the only income based apartment complex at this time.
